Contra turpem libellum Philomusi defensio theologiae scholastieae & neotericorum...

Strasbourg: Preuss, 1510. An attack by German scholar Jakob Wimpfeling on Jakob Locher's (1471-1528) work 'Vitiosae sterilis mulae Comparatio'. Locher's work, first published in 1506, was an attack on scholastic philosophy, urging a return to patristic sources and poetic literature. Wimpfeling portrays Locher as a fool and disparages poetry, despite his own humanistic leanings. The wood-cut at the end of the work (by Durer?) is reminiscent of Brant's 'Ship of Fools', and may have been reproduced from a Latin edition of that work. Another lovely wood-cut of Christ entering Jerusalem adorns the title-page. Of special note is the collection of verses by various contributors at the end of the book, including one by the then twelve year old Melanchthon. 4to (22.5 x 16cm), 18 leaves. Small repair to title-page, some toning, a bit of staining touching margins. Antique marginalia with manicules in margins. Bound in boards.. Item #192
